Applanix POS LV Steers CMU Engineers to Double Podium Finish in DARPA Unmanned Vehicle Race

RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO – After a close race to the finish line, Applanix joins Carnegie Mellon University in celebrating an impressive second and third place finish of the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. Using Applanix POS LV (Position and Orientation System, Land Vehicles) integrated Inertial/GPS technology as part of their on-board navigation systems, the Carnegie Melon University (CMU) Red Team’s "Sandstorm" and Red Too Team’s "H1ghlander" vehicles both successfully completed the 132.2 mile on-road/off-road course.

Another Successful Applanix User Group Meeting...

The 2005 Applanix User Group Meeting brought together professionals from around the globe to discuss individual operations in the air, on land, and over the waves using Applanix technology. This year’s seminars were punctuated with well publicized application examples, including: Recovery operations following the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster, robotic vehicles of the DARPA Grand Challenge, change detection and trip route visualization tools for military/security planning, and assessing hurricane Katrina’s fury upon the Gulf of Mexico coastline. Over three engaging and eventful days, new concepts were presented alongside application examples, future digital sensor designs, and GPS/IMU improvements for aircraft, land vehicles, and marine vessels.

Applanix POS LV technology guides Red Team to success in DARPA race qualifiers

Using Applanix POS LV integrated Inertial/GPS technology as part of their on-board navigation systems, the Carnegie Melon University (CMU) Red Team have successfully completed the first series of qualifying rounds for the upcoming DARPA Grand Challenge. The qualifiers last a week culminating in the event, a 175 mile race across the Mojave Desert to be run October 8th.

NOAA Uses Applanix DSS to Survey Hurricane Dennis Destruction

NOAA today posted online more than 600 aerial images of the USA Gulf Coast regions struck by Hurricane Dennis last Sunday. The Florida Panhandle regions photographed range from Pensacola to Panama City. The aerial photograph missions were conducted by the NOAA Remote Sensing Division the day after Hurricane Dennis made landfall at 3:25 p.m. EDT on Santa Rosa Island between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach, Fla., packing winds between 115 mph to 120 mph. NOAA will conduct more aerial flights of the affected regions.
