September 1, 2005 NOAA Uses Applanix Rapid Response DSS System to Survey Hurricane Katrina Damage
Sept. 1, 2005 — The day after Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast, a NOAA Remote Sensing Division aircraft was airborne over the area taking detailed digital imagery of the devastated coastline.
The Cessna Citation jet aircraft, equipped with various types of sensing technology, used an Applanix DSS Digital Sensor System, to generate over 350 high resolution digital images of the coastline and inland areas affected by the hurricane. The georeferenced digital images were taken from an altitude of 7,500 feet and posted online the following day. To view the full NOAA news release, visit the NOAA website. The DSS digital camera system utilizes integrated inertial/GPS technology to provide the direct georeferencing component for the imagery without the use of ground control. This attribute is a key component is making the DSS an ideal imaging system for rapid response applications, as in the case of natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. NOAA is using the DSS for research and development and for various NOAA programs, such as coastal mapping. The organization is dedicated to enhancing economic security and national safety through the prediction and research of weather and climate-related events and providing environmental stewardship of the nation’s coastal and marine resources.
